ACHRO Town Hall Description

In a unionized environment, conflict resolution and managing conflict relies heavily on a multiple number of factors. These factors include mixture of understanding your District’s Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), your workplace culture, relationship building, relational trust, and the dynamics that exist among your District’s leadership and ‘how’ conflict is navigated at all levels. It is important to understand conflict styles, the tools for managing conflict common challenges, practical and effective strategies of maintaining positive working relationships, no matter what the outcomes are. However, ‘how’ these conflicts are addressed, can make all the difference in shaping positive learning and working environments.

In this session, we will discuss the definitions of “conflict” as it relates to workplace conflict, workplace conflict styles, professionalism in the workplace, engage in conversations about what a toxic work environment is, and we will discuss ways in which we can develop a better understanding of “power” dynamics.  It’s not just about following the rules/procedures, it’s about how we can contribute to a positive workplace, building strong working/collegial relationships, fostering better communication, and understanding workplace boundaries to help better support workplace environments. Participants and exercises will examine examples of professional etiquette and workplace conflict scenarios.

Professional Learning Outcomes:

  • Explore and understand the various layers of workplace conflict, professional etiquette, and importance of positive workplace culture
  • Examine the various layers of workplace boundaries;
  • To develop a better sense of what a toxic workplace environment is and how this may contribute to campus culture;
  • Develop a deeper insight on building positive working/collegial relationships between HR leadership and union leadership;
  • Recognize the importance of workplace etiquette, workplace boundaries, and best practices on how to avoid professional “blurred lines.”

The ACHRO Town Halls also serve a way to build community and networking opportunities amongst human resources professionals throughout the State of California. ACHRO Town Halls are led by leaders from Bay 10, Central 14, North 14 and Southern 30.
